Divorce & Family Law Solicitors in Peterborough
When a relationship comes to an end, or when arrangements for your children or finances need to be sorted out, the hardest part is often knowing where to start. Belderbos Solicitors is a specialist family-law-only firm that can help people in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and the surrounding area with divorce and separation, children matters, financial settlements and domestic abuse. Begin with a free, no-obligation discovery call before you commit to anything.
Peterborough is one of the largest legal markets in the region, and there is no shortage of firms competing for your attention. We will not try to win your business with vague promises. We are a specialist family-law-only firm, and that focus is what genuinely sets us apart.
Why choose Belderbos for family law in Peterborough?
Choosing the right solicitor matters, particularly in a busy city where most of the visible options are large full-service firms that handle everything from commercial property to personal injury. Here is what makes us different:
- Family law is all we do. We are a specialist family-law-only firm. Our attention is not divided across unrelated areas of law, which means deeper expertise and more focused advice on divorce, finances, children and domestic abuse.
- Resolution-accredited. Our solicitors are members of Resolution and hold its specialist accreditations, including Collaborative Family Lawyer and trained Mediator status. Resolution members commit to a constructive, non-confrontational approach that reduces conflict and cost.
- Out of court wherever possible. Court is not the only route, and it is often not the best one. We prioritise mediation, collaborative law, arbitration and lawyer-led negotiation to settle matters more quickly, more privately and at lower cost, while staying fully prepared to go to court when that is genuinely the right step.
- Child-focused and empathetic. Where children are involved, their welfare comes first. We work to protect it while keeping conflict between parents as low as it can be.
- A free, no-obligation discovery call. You can speak to us before committing to anything, so you understand your position and your choices before you decide how to proceed.
- A staffed office a direct train away. Our main office in Oakham is reachable from Peterborough by a direct train in around 25 minutes, making specialist family law advice genuinely accessible.
Ready to talk it through? Book your free discovery call or call us on 01572 490660.

Children matters
We help parents agree where a child lives and how they spend time with each parent, and we advise on Child Arrangements Orders, specific issue and prohibited steps orders and relocation. See our children and child arrangements service.
Financial settlements
Dividing finances on divorce follows no fixed formula; it turns on your particular circumstances. We help you reach a fair settlement and secure it properly through a consent order. See financial settlements.
Domestic abuse
If you or your children are at risk, we act quickly to seek protective orders, including non-molestation and occupation orders, with discretion and urgency. Read about domestic abuse.

Whether you are planning to marry or are already married, a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement can provide clarity and protection. See nuptial agreements.

Where we can, we keep you out of the courtroom. Our out-of-court solutions include mediation, collaborative law, family arbitration and lawyer-led negotiation. See our out-of-court solutions overview.
Court proceedings
When agreement simply is not possible, we represent you firmly and clearly through court proceedings, guiding you through each stage so you always know what to expect.
Please note that we are unable to offer legal aid.

How to reach our family solicitors in Peterborough
If you are based in Peterborough, our nearest meeting point is our main staffed office at 20A Church Street, Oakham, Rutland, LE15 6AA, around 25 miles to the west.
By train. This is often the easiest option. There are direct trains from Peterborough to Oakham on the line that links Peterborough, Stamford and Oakham, with a journey of around 25 minutes. Oakham station is a short walk from our Church Street office.
By car. By road it is around 25 miles and about 40 minutes. The most straightforward route is to take the A47 west out of Peterborough towards Wansford and Thornhaugh, then pick up the A1 south before the A606 takes you west into Oakham via Ketton and Empingham.
By bus. There is no fast direct coach between the two towns, so the train or the car is usually the most practical option for a face-to-face visit. We also offer phone and video appointments, which many clients prefer.
Plan your journey. Our Oakham office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and is our main staffed base. Please get in touch to arrange a time before you travel.
Accessibility
We want meeting us to be straightforward for everyone. Our Oakham office is our main staffed base, with a pay-and-display car park opposite and level access from the street. If you have specific accessibility requirements, or would prefer a phone or video appointment, please let us know when you book and we will accommodate you.
Frequently asked questions about family law in Peterborough
How much does a family solicitor cost in Peterborough?
Costs depend on the type of matter and how it is resolved; an agreed divorce settled out of court costs far less than a contested case. We keep our pricing transparent and discuss it openly at your free discovery call, so you know where you stand before committing to anything.
Which court will deal with my divorce or family case in Peterborough?
Family matters for the Peterborough area are handled by Peterborough Combined Court Centre. We manage all court paperwork and any hearings on your behalf, so you rarely need to deal with the court directly.
Do I need a solicitor for divorce?
You can apply for a no-fault divorce yourself, but the divorce itself rarely settles the most important issues, namely your finances and arrangements for any children. Getting those right, and having them recorded in a binding consent order, is where specialist advice makes the biggest difference.
How long does a divorce take in the UK?
Under the no-fault system there is a minimum timescale of about 26 weeks. After you apply, there is a 20-week reflection period before you can apply for the conditional order, then a further six weeks and one day before the final order. In practice many cases take around seven to eight months, and longer if finances or children matters remain unresolved.
What are Child Arrangements Orders?
A Child Arrangements Order is the court order that sets out who a child lives with and how they spend time with each parent. It replaces the older terms "custody" and "access". The court's paramount concern is always the welfare of the child, and in many cases parents agree arrangements without an order ever being needed.
